Silver gelatin prints

Silver gelatin printing, the traditional darkroom printing has been the primary black-and-white process since its development in the late 1880s and consists of three layers—paper, baryta, and gelatin—on which an image is produced. The paper essentially serves as a base, with the baryta layer (a surface preparation of barium sulfate) sitting on top to separate the image-containing gelatin layer from the paper support. The gelatin layer is made up of an emulsion that consists of light-sensitive silver compounds that form the image following exposure of the negative and development in a chemical bath. Another distinguishing feature is the smooth, even image surface.

I am now pleased to offer limited edition handmade SILVER GELATIN prints of select black and white 4”x5” negatives made using large format cameras. The prints are made on Ilford Fiber Based Classic paper. Ilford FB Classic paper is a traditional premium quality, black and white paper on a 255g/m2 baryta coated fibre base.
It has a white base tint, and a neutral image colour. Prints made on the paper have deep blacks, an excellent tonal rendition, and excellent overall print appearance

Prints are offered on 8”x10”, 11”x14”, 16”x20” and 20”x24” sized papers. The actual image size is slightly smaller due to the white border. The prints are made personally by me in the darkroom with traditional darkroom techniques, and are processed using Ilford chemistry. No digital processing is utilized in this print making, maintaining the purist darkroom philosophy. The prints are processed to current archival standards, signed, mounted, and matted on 100% rag museum board.
